10 Renewable Energy Companies in Germany to Know


Germany is all in on renewable energy. To date, more than half of the country’s electricity generation stems from renewable sources like solar and wind facilities, and power output is steadily increasing year over year. Behind the scenes, a number of greentech and utilities companies have powered the country’s renewable shift with new tech, including solar panels and energy optimization software, among other products. Below are some of the renewable energy companies in Germany to know.

BayWa is a German conglomerate that operates in agriculture, energy, logistics and trading. Through its energy subsidiary, BayWa r.e., the company builds and manages several renewable energy facilities, such as solar and wind farms. 

 

EnBW was formed in 1997 through a merger of two energy companies, and it is now one of Germany’s largest wind farm developers. Beginning in 2020, the company renewed its interest in green energy and began investing in onshore and offshore wind farms. In addition to wind power, EnBW also generates energy from solar and hydro sources.

 

ABO Energy is a European energy company that works across the entire renewable energy industry. The company invests in clean energy projects, including solar and wind assets, providing facility management services and selling energy to utility companies.

 

Siemens Energy is a German company that spun off from multinational company Siemens. It develops and manufactures wind turbines for onshore and offshore applications through its Siemens Gamesa division. Additionally, Siemens Energy offers technologies to produce green hydrogen, a type of renewable energy produced through electrolysis.

 

Tanso is a Munich-based technology company that helps industrial businesses reduce their carbon footprint. Through its sustainability software, Tanso provides tools for tracking industrial emissions and helping businesses manufacture products more efficiently. According to Tanso, its software products can also help SMB manufacturers meet European Union regulations.

 

Munich-based Orcan Energy developed an industrial energy converter that helps companies reduce their CO2 emissions and energy costs. Its machine upcycles unused energy and turns it into clean electricity that an industrial facility can instantly use.

 

Nordex designs and manufactures wind turbines. It was one of the first manufacturers to produce 1- and 1.5-megawatt turbines, and today the company produces multiple models that generate between 4 and 6 megawatts of power. Nordex also works with large businesses to develop custom turbines. According to the company, its products are found in over 40 countries.

 

RWE is a large energy company that has invested in several renewable facilities. Currently, RWE has a stake in onshore wind, solar, hydropower and biomass facilities. With the energy produced, RWE delivers custom solutions for municipalities, residential homes, mines and utility providers.

 

BASF is a German multinational company that began as a chemical manufacturer but is now heavily invested in renewable energy. Through its subsidiary, BASF Renewable Energy GmbH, it invests in various renewable energy projects, including solar farms, and aims to operate its facilities with net-zero carbon emissions.

 

ENVIRIA works to make solar energy easy and attainable for businesses. The company operates across the whole solar ecosystem, providing solutions for financing or renting rooftop photovoltaic systems. Besides being on the supply side, ENVIRIA also employs individuals to install solar panels and other accessories like charging stations and storage reserves.
