Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour talks ahead of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final on Tuesday.
Roddy said yesterday that Chatty would need to get into practice. Obviously he’s out there today, but it looked like maybe he’s not part of it tonight and Scott would be the option if he can’t go. More than likely I’d still call him probable. We’re still debating it, but I think it was a good sign that he was out there and you know, whether he, you know, ready, ready to go, that’ll be determined here shortly, but Um, good sign that at least he’s out there with us. Right side and the back here, I, uh, sorry, uh, I was curious about your relationship with, with Jordan Staal. I mean, you guys are, you were a similar kind of player to him. Uh, you’ve been his coach for a very long time now. How’s that relationship developed and, and what is the, the best thing about having a, a captain that you’re close with? Trust and belief. I mean he’s, you know, he’s been, you know, I talk about him a lot during the year, but over the years, but he’s he’s really. Be the most probably important player that we’ve had just solid, you know, you can build around something that consistent, all those words that you use to describe people that you love, that’s Jordan’s style. So um I I could not say enough good things about that person. And as a player, you get to watch, he’s a solid player. Uh, honest as they come, you know, lays it on every shift. I as a coach from a coaching perspective, that’s, that’s all you can ever ask. Left side front row. Rod, if I could just clarify, did you say Chatfield is probable, or I’ll, I’ll downgrade it then, but I don’t know. I haven’t really talked to him he was skating out there. He, he definitely wants to play, so we’ll, we’ll see where it goes. Stay on the left. If Scotty is the option for you guys to go tonight, what, what does he bring kind of decision to go with him? Well, he’s been around a little longer, um, knows our system a little better than I think Nicky does, and he played well when he came up. So, um, you know, there’s a righty lefty that does matter a little bit. Um, so those little things help and um you know I think he’s he’s earned the right to have a shot, so we’ll see. Yeah Rod, uh, just given the, the brand that you guys play and how intense it is throughout an entire season, how do you guys find a way to elevate it come playoff time and continuously elevate it now that you’ve reached the stage of the playoffs? Well, that’s the trick. I mean, it’s probably, I mean, both teams, I think at this time of year beat up and mentally, physically, it’s just, it’s a grind. That’s why this is the toughest thing to win and Um, and now there is the trick in there is trying to find, OK, can you, can you give me a little more? Can you, you know, find that little extra, um, you know, there’s things that we’ve done this year, probably during the season to Give you a little more of a chance of that by how he maybe not backed off but changed a little bit during the regular season, you know, maybe not so. Leading a little bit left for this time of year, um, but, uh. There’s, there’s no secrets. I mean, I think both teams are feeling a little bit, you know, this, there’s a grind and, um, I don’t think you need to be motivated this time of year. We all know that you know you’re getting closer and closer, but that that’s, that’s, uh, it’s a good question. Don’t really have a good answer for you. Right side 3rd row, yeah, just 11 quick. If two teams are similar playing at this level, what makes the difference? Well, it’s gonna be probably. Play here or there, player here or there that finds a way to do something a little special, um. I think that’s who can stick to the game plan and not deviate. I mean, you’re right, both teams played. Very similar and have the same I think thought process and how they go about it so. You know, we understand that and they do it better in any way, so we also understand that. Rod, we’ve heard repeatedly throughout these playoffs from opposing coaches from New Jersey, from Washington, that Carolina is a A difficult team to play but an easy one to prepare for. Is that something you, you like hearing from them, or would you rather see a different narrative? Um, 100%, that’s what you want to hear. Stop it. Right, Florida, I can tell you what they’re gonna do. We can go through the game plan. I know nobody’s been able to stop it. Like that’s. There you go, in a nutshell.
