SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. — Those wanting to know exactly when a new Sheetz at the Shoppes at South Abington Township will open its doors may need to wait a bit longer.
Ankim Shah, the CEO of Falcon Partners LLC, the group developing the Sheetz as part of a 37,399-square-foot shopping center project — whose job it is to oversee every aspect of the operation — told The Times-Tribune to check back in about a month.
He said he is just awaiting final approvals from PennDOT and the township.
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials say that the project is currently “under inspection.”
For many who pass the convenience store daily, which sits close to an existing Sheetz convenience store it is slated to replace, questions arise as to what has caused the delay.
In October 2023, a Sheetz representative said the store was scheduled to open in the spring or summer of 2024 at 1101 Northern Blvd.
The current store next to the site, at 1109 Northern Blvd., was scheduled to close when the new store opened, the representative added.
At that time, eight pumps sat under a red canopy and red brick building. A sign reading “Now Hiring” was posted on the side of a trailer facing the street.
In July 2024, Shah said highway occupancy work and final touches were in progress at the site. He described the project as being in its “finishing stages.”
“We’re adding a turn-in lane, a right-turn lane into the center and an additional traffic light where the new Sheetz is,” he said in a July 2024 interview.
He said a stormwater system and new utilities were being installed, which needed to be finished before the doors can open.
During that interview, Shah said he imagined that would happen “by Thanksgiving.”
South Abington Twp. officials did not return a phone call requesting information about the delay in opening the convenience store.
