COLUMBUS, Ohio — Behind a strong start from Tate Carey and a four-hit night from Jeter Ybarra, the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Ohio State 13-3 on Sunday night (May 4) to earn a doubleheader and series sweep of the Buckeyes at Bill Davis Stadium.
Michigan (30-17, 14-10 Big Ten) was led offensively by Ybarra, who added three RBI to his four hits. Keegan O’Hearn scored three runs and hit his second home run of the season. Mitch Voit added his 11th home run of the season and reached three more times. Carey (8-0) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with eight strikeouts.
The Wolverines got on the board in the first inning, which started with a one-out walk from Brayden Jefferis. A hit-by-pitch moved him to second, and a single from Ybarra scored Jefferis to put Michigan in front 1-0.
Ohio State (11-33, 3-21 Big Ten) worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the frame, but Carey helped himself when he snagged a liner back to the mound and doubled up the runner at first. He then induced a flyout to left to keep U-M ahead.
O’Hearn drew a walk to open the second, and a Benny Casillas fielder’s choice gave U-M runners on the corners with two outs. Jefferis drew a walk to load the bases before Voit reached on an error, scoring O’Hearn and Tyler Inge, who replaced Casillas, to give U-M a 3-0 advantage.
Carey allowed his first hit of the contest to open the bottom of the third inning but recorded a groundout and two strikeouts to keep the Buckeyes off the board.
A single from Noah Miller opened the fifth inning and brought O’Hearn to the plate. He homered for the second time today — the first, a two-run shot in game one — this one going off the foul pole in left field to increase the Michigan lead to 5-0. Carey tallied two more strikeouts in the fifth to keep OSU off the board.
With one out in the sixth, Voit homered to left, adding to the Michigan lead. Carey pitched another 1-2-3 inning in the sixth and added his eighth strikeout to open the frame.
O’Hearn drew a hit-by-pitch to open the seventh, and after a wild pitch and a single from Colby Turner, he scored on an errant pickoff throw. Turner came around to score on a single from Inge after Greg Pace Jr. walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Voit drew a walk to load the bases. Ybarra reached on a fielder’s choice and scored Pace, and U-M led 9-3.
The Buckeyes got the runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but Max Debiec came in to relieve Carey and induced a groundout and flyout to end the comeback attempt.
Miller doubled to open the eighth, and AJ Garcia, who pinch-ran for Miller, came around to score on a double from Turner. Pace and Inge drew walks to load the bases with one out. OSU went to the bullpen for the second time, and Robert Hamchuk singled to center field, scoring Turner and Pace. Voit was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, and Ybarra singled to score Inge from third.
Will Rogers entered the game in the eighth and ended the contest with a strikeout after a two-out walk to clinch the run-rule win and the series.
Michigan will return home for a Tuesday (May 6) tilt against Central Michigan at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., and the contest will be streamed live on B1G+.
